The winery was founded in 1910 by the present owner’s grandfather. It was situated in the centre of Elvillar, parallel to the main square, and this is where the wine was made up until 1978, when another winery was built at the village entrance by the present owner and his father. In 2005, the new project was undertaken in Laguardia, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria. The total capacity of the tanks has reached 1,000,000 litres, and the wine maturing facility holds 3,000 barrels. All the grapes come from the owners’ vineyard, which covers an area of 30 hectares, and the vineyards belonging to other members of the family, all of which are situated between Laguardia and Elvillar, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. We are proud of the quality of our vineyards, some of which are 100 years old, while the rest have an average age of over 40.
Time makes its natural selection and also ensures a responsible grape and wine-growing practice committed to achieving the quality that we seek in this project, reducing the number of grapes but considerably increasing their quality, given that the age of the stocks makes the fruit scarcer. The excellent clay-lime soil of the Rioja Alavesa, together with its optimal microclimate, provides suitable conditions in which to grow the most highly-rated varieties for making the best wines. Ownership of the land allows makes it possible to guarantee the quality of the wine by controlling the soils, looking after the stocks and constantly examining the grapes in order to pick them at just the right time.
The winery is equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking technology, although it should be emphasised that the procedures are the traditional ones of the Rioja Alavesa.
We are currently selecting the barrel-age wine, but with the 2007 vintage we have also carried out a more intense selection of grapes, even from the same vine, for specific fermentations with the Ganymede system and French oak barrel fermentations.
